Beyond the gift basket
The difference between a poem commission and a gift basket is not necessarily a price point or production quality, though both are there. The major difference is deep care: an artist learned something true about each guest and commemorated what makes each one irreplaceable. Unlike consumable welcome gifts that are certainly appreciated but quickly fade from memory, these are bespoke works of art that guests take home and treasure.
The poems also become part of the communal guest experience. Guests find connection with each other as they share their poems, and that sharing creates a genuine sense of camaraderie between people who might arrive as strangers but leave as friends.
